The BNP has nominated Eliza Zaman as its candidate for the by-election to a vacant reserved seat for women in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad, following the resignation of Ferdousi Ahmed Misty.
Shairul Kabir Khan, a member of the BNP Media Cell, confirmed the nomination. The party also announced the decision in a notice signed by its Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Monday (October 26).
Eliza Zaman is a member of the BNP’s National Executive Committee and joint convener of Pirojpur district BNP. She also serves as organising secretary of the central committee of Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal, the party’s women’s wing.
Misty resigned from her parliamentary seat on October 1 following allegations of involvement in an attack, vandalism and looting at the Radda MCH-FP health centre in Mirpur. The resignation came at the prime minister’s direction.
The Election Commission (EC) subsequently began preparations for a by-election to fill the vacant seat.
According to the schedule announced by the EC on October 12, Monday (October 26) is the last date for submitting nomination papers. The papers will be scrutinised on October 27, while November 1 is the deadline for withdrawal of candidacies. Electoral symbols will be allocated on November 2, and voting is scheduled for November 12.
If only one candidate remains valid after scrutiny and withdrawal, they will be declared elected unopposed, in accordance with the election schedule.
The BNP began distributing nomination forms for the by-election on October 16. A total of 70 women collected the forms, while 68 submitted applications.
Zaman had sought the BNP nomination to contest the Pirojpur-1 constituency, comprising Pirojpur Sadar, Nazirpur and Indurkani, in the 13th parliamentary election. However, she did not receive the party’s nomination for the January 12 election.
Her father, Sardar Sultan Mahmud, was a former member of parliament.
